Cookie Jar Collecting Hints
I have read that restoration does not necessarily decrease the value of a jar so long as it is well painted in its original colors and the restoration is disclosed prior to sale. I agree that restoration should always be disclosed, however I am not sure about not decreasing the value. I don' t know if I would pay top dollar for a restored cookie jar....but that could change in the future if I come across one that I have been searching for and really want for my collection. Cracks or chips can decrease the value of cookie jars, so its important to inspect them very closely.
Price, of course, is a consideration. Some jars are very pricey, however, it is true that if a deal sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Do your homework before you buy anything that seems like its a great buy. It might be, but it most probably is not what it claims to be.
Shop flea markets, antique shops, and garage sales. You might come away with a treasure hidden on one of the shelves.
Try ebay and other online auctions. This is where I found some of my favorite cookie jars at some of the best prices. Inspect the photos and descriptions carefully and don't hesitate to contact the seller with any questions you may have.
And lastly and most importantly, enjoy. Enjoy the hunt for your cookie jar, enjoy your collection, and enjoy each day you learn more about the cookie jars you love.
